Pickney had a great program on hiking trails with a packed house and people found out about the program from lots of different methods.
Topic: Building bridges with city government and school district Southfield did a Teacher's Tea Time and invited all public school teachers, principals and media specialist. The turnout was low but a lot of great things came out of it - including more book talks at schools and having a library table at some of the parent teacher conferences and we issued library cards those nights. Hazel Park had a teacher's tea time but no teacher's showed - next time they will try it at one of the schools and will advertise a prize drawing. Announcements: Southfield is hosting Visions of the Universe exhibit Detroit has a new director West Bloomfield has Tween Time with gaming and homework help to help 50 kids and just got constant contact Canton and Dearborn Heights are working with the Ann Arbor Hand On Museum and SNAP grant Canton got a Target grant Ypsilanti took big budget cuts; had their 3rd annual songwriting expo on Oct 10th that ends at corner brewery for an acoustic set Pickney had an Oct 10th family fun walk; had good luck with food programs - wine, beer, smoothie Per Pickney - If you are doing an educational program as a governmental entity you don't need a liquor license but do let the local police know and everyone in attendace needs to be 21+ |

Topic - Volunteers
It can be tougher in an union environment How are volunteers screened and what responsibilities are they given Good idea is for volunteers to distribute flyers around town Make volunteers your PR workforce and community talkers Michigan Shuls Yahoo Group - targeted at Jewish Detroit oaklandcountymoms.com is a great website and is thinking about expanding Discussion on Social Network Policy - no one has a policy Ann Arbor specifically has no policy - they operate on trust and knowing that not everyone will like everything and accept that okay so long as everyone shows civility and respect A communications policy can easily extent to social network as you are communicating online Need to accept some negativity but it can help you address problems sooner Oftentimes groups turn out to be self policing Don't over think it - just dive in Can be helpful in building relationships - there are social network clubs of Detroit and Ann Arbor which have PR professionals networking Let everyone be able to post online (equivalent to can everyone answer phones) Facebook allows you to have multiple adminstrators or you can give the password to multiple staff members Good Youtube video - Are You Ready Social Networking Howell Chamber of Commerce is having round tables on different social network sites Canton uses Drupal and gets lots of comments and back and forth discussions, it self polices well and they get a chance to thank everyone Measuring social network sites - Canton uses Facebook demographics (some are in Egypt) - they have Friend us on Facebook on their website's front page Canton bought its first facebook ad for a Tweetup game night Social networks can boost your google ranks Detroit News isn't posting much in their paper for Canton but is retweeting their posts |

Next meeting is Thursday, March 18th at Ypsilanti Public Library at 10am.
What should our main discussion topic be? I'm open for suggestions - although as you know our discussions are pretty free flowing. Minutes from September 17, 2009 meeting at Novi Public Library Discussion started at: How to publicize locally with newspapers dying Detroit still has many papers and they are using clippings. The free papers are still strong but less customers are reading them. Jackson's paper has downsized but the county paper is still strong and gets good advertising - Myspace really helped with their millage. Question posed to the group - does cable help - only a few people raised their hand Jackson does ads on Fuelyourmind.com and eblasts with the commerce and arts foundation Detroit buys specific slots on Comcast for Detroit zip codes on Lifetime, BET, USA & MTV - $35 per commericial Bay County got a special deal they went in on for $1 a slot for $300 slots with their cable company - however, Bay County still finds that in house marketing works best With the economy down very little is out there for free but there are more specials and deals out there. Public Service Announcements have gone to seed and are basically no more. Detroit spent $10,000 for their literacy walk in radio spots but everyone heard about it. Idea - have an author coming - have them do a radio interview with the author in the person or over the phone. Dearborn Heights does very specific target marketing - working with stores to let them know what is going on that would match with the store Show of hands - how many people have marketing plans - only three people raised their hand; marketing plans can help to hold you accountable and quantify your objectives |

Hi everyone,
I'm doing an informal survey here - when you post pictures of patrons at events or just using the library on your website, do you get permission from those pictured? Do you do anything differently when they are minors? I work with the Ypsilanti District Library, and we would like to start using some of the great photos we've taken over the past few years, but aren't quite sure if we need to secure releases, do something else, etc. Thanks in advance for your help! |

Here are the notes from the April 28th, 2009 meeting of the MI PR Group at the Bloomfield Township Public Library
Digital TV transition - Conrad Welsing talked about how DPL is a DTV walk in help center. The transition effects seniors and those in urban environments the hardest. They have a TV with a convertor box to show how to hook up the convertor box. They view this is a customer service to their patrons. There will be a large ad blitz June 2 - 12 right before and after the transition. A question on the forum about Darwin anniversary and adult science programming. Ideas were to look at local universities for speakers - EMU has Eastern Experts. U of M did a Darwin semester theme and exhibit 2 years ago. Main topic - Libraries in the bad economy Volunteer base is great when many are unemployed or underemployed - wide skill base and they are looking for something to put on their resume. Orion township has had great luck with volunteers helping to plan events, keep up website, fundraising, graphic design and IT help. Sites to find volunteers are www.volunteermatch.org - www.1800volunteer.org - MI Works has a volunteer database Many high schools now require 40 hours of volunteer service for graduation Orion's volunteer coordinator has gotten staff to embrace volunteers through determination and placing volunteers in the best slot for them Dearborn has teen volunteers set up the summer crafts and help at the program Discussion on volunteers and that the volunteer coordinator is needed as volunteers take work to oversee and the coordinator is the best bet for getting staff buyin Ideas for things for volunteers to help with are programs and program set ups and clean ups; book repair Detroit is offering a 4 week amnesty period to get materials back and let more people use the library |

This from MichLib-L:
What a shame! Presume there's nothing we can do to influence WWJ, but the publication of the GreatStuff e-newsletter and web site will be suspended effective Sunday, March 8, 2009. Newspapers have been shutting down a lot of this sort of p.r. outlet for announcements, so it will be doubly missed. Maybe statewide will be better, but it would help to do it by regions. GreatStuff has been so convenient to search whenever seeking something to do in a specific area or a specific type of event. Libraries have especially appreciated this way to spread the word about their programs, in addition my local community theatre & my storytelling guild will both miss this outlet for letting people know about our programs For those seeking storytelling events in Michigan, at least there's the e-newsletter, MI Story, & I will continue its online version at <http://www.MichiganStorytelling.org>. The Bulletin Board page there started out as a supplement to the e-newsletter, giving more details than the newsletter format permits & adding any late-breaking news. In the past month it began chronicling developing news on the state of arts & culture funding & giving ideas on how to make it self-sustaining & eventually free of the state budget. I suggest becoming a regular reader for now. LoiS(preading the news & sorry bad news travels faster than good news) Lois Sprengnether Keel

Hi all, our library is looking to create/ redesign our logo. Does anyone have any suggestions? Specifically, I'd love to know any graphic design/ advertising companies you've used and been happy with, and I'd love to know how much in-house development there was (staff involvement, comittees, etc.). Any info you can pass along would be great!
